MEET YOUR SHEPHERD
LAURIE FIELD
My adventure into raising sheep began when I was just a regular mom to three girls.
I grew up as a horse crazy girl who of course thought she wanted to be a vet. I was lucky enough for my parents to have indulged those young passions as much as they could. I received my Bachelor’s Degree in Animal Science at Colorado State University where I met my now husband of 30+ years, Brian. We moved around the country for a few years eventually settling in Canby, Oregon.
When we had our three girls, my husband Brian would tell them stories from his childhood of being raised in SW Colorado on a sheep and hay ranch where everyday was a great adventure. His stories fueled their ideas of having sheep and we eventually gave in to that idea when we bought our first parcel of land.
GETTING STARTED
We started with the St. Croix Hair Sheep while the girls were young because they were the easiest sheep for our girls to handle and care for at the time. We fell in love with the easy care, low maintenance, and sweet personalities of the breed.
GROWING THE FLOCK
As the years went on, our girls participated in 4-H and we started purchasing club lambs and then breeding ewes to show at our local county fair. Raising sheep proved to be a great way to teach our girls responsibility. They had their daily farm chores that were part of their life and ours. As they got older we found ourselves deep in the FFA world where we increased our flock dramatically and started to sell breeding stock from our club lamb program as well. This was a time of intense learning for all of us at the farm, but we loved it all.
BREED CONSERVATION
As the girls grew up and moved on through college, to husbands, and new cities, I had come to love each of the sheep we cared for and they became my new project. I love the learning the science behind breeding and livestock care. Raising these animals has become quite the passion of mine and I am so grateful to be able to share it with our ever growing community.
My selection practices within my breeding programs have given me two herds in one, that are very easy care, naturally handled and I truly love to work with both. Through this I have found a passion for breed conservation. I am the current secretary for the St. Croix Hair Sheep International Association. We register, promote, and encourage quality in the breeding of pure white, polled St. Croix Hair Sheep and we do all possible to bring their natural qualities to perfection.
Passion for Lambs
My favorite time of year is lambing season with all its drama and joy of animal birth and lamb care. I also love learning each of the many unique personalities of our flock.
Both breeds of sheep have their place in the market and I love them equally and for different reasons. Completely different herd care keeps me on my toes but I have come to a place where my animal care is not very fussy unless there is a medical need.
